With interest rates rising, economic and earnings growth slowing, the duration of traditional fixed income assets at all-time highs, and elevated inflation proving stickier than anticipated, we argue that a traditional stock and bond portfolio faces increasing headwinds and the prospect of lower forward returns versus the last decade. In this presentation we discuss alternative investment strategies that may help investors reach these goals and the trends shaping the opportunity set for alternatives.

Investors willingness to take risk are often difficult to assess and quantify. Many asset allocators create models based on the ability to take risk without properly considering investors willingness to take risk; as a result, a great dichotomy between portfolios created taking into account ability (objective factors) and investors true risk tolerance considering willingness to take risk. The BNY Mellon Portfolio Strategy group provides solutions on assessing client’s willingness to take risk, pinpointing emotional or cognitive bias, reconciling objective and subjective factors, and tailoring advice to each client based on personality and risk tolerance.
